One of the many, many things we love about Calvi is its walkability. Aside from losing yourself in the labyrinth of the
Citadel, there are plenty of other destinations on offer:
1.
Up the hill to the chapel of Notre Dame de la Serra
This is the one we did on Saturday, and you really do get lots of bang for your buck. It's only 210 metres up, which hardly registers compared with all the giants around, but it offers fabulous views. The chapel dates back to the 15th century, and there's a big celebration to Our Lady of the Serra every September:
The terrain on the way up
From the so-called strawberry tree, these are
arbutus or arbouses. You can make jams and liqueurs with them
Herbs, just growing there wild
The chapel itself is very picturesque
And there are many moving testaments to faith
The views, of course, are awesome. Somewhere in here is Corsica's highest mountain, Monte Cinto, which boasts 2706 metres of verticality
It's a bit tricky working out which one he is, even with this handy guide
Nearby is a neat little cemetery
We took a different route down, and you have to go carefully on the loose, skiddy surface. But once safely on the road, you can admire your surroundings again
And you can finish off with a walk through the town, which is always rewarding
2.
Along the boardwalk and back on the beach
This was today's little expedition. Right alongside the railway tracks there's a boardwalk, which runs for quite a way. And once it finishes, you can return to Calvi via the beach.
If you time it right, you can start your walk with a train view. Yay!
The boardwalk-by-the-railway
Small humans, big mountains
This is where you say goodbye to the trainline
And there's that citadel again...
The beach, pleasantly quiet at this time of year
And another clamber up the citadel rounds this walk off nicely
Awesome house...
The cat thinks so too
And it's always a joy to come back to this accommodation...
