We haven't been super-lucky with the weather here in Istanbul. Monday was the wettest day of the whole trip:
So, at the end of a soggy walk, we consoled ourselves with a fish sandwich. At GBP 3 per piece, these were at the dearer end of the fish-sandwich spectrum. But very good. Juicy fish; bread that was crusty but not too crusty; an interesting salad, with a variety of leaves; and -- of course -- Turkish tea:
Many Turkish treats have already appeared in too many of our photographs to merit extra shots. But we have enjoyed revisiting simit (sesame-studded bread rings), salep (the perfect winter beverage), and that lovely yogurty drink called ayran (refreshing at any time of year).
This morning we treated ourselves to breakfast at Mado. When we're staying in hotels in the Turkish environment, we love the classic Turkish buffet breakfasts, which of course you miss out on when you're self-catering. So this was the next best thing:
We ordered menemen, plus a platter
The picture captures only a bit of the platter... A bread basket; three kinds of cheese, with apricot and walnuts; borek; egg; green and black olives, with lemon; tomatoes, cucumber, and salad leaves; acuka (a really moreish spread made of tomato, red capsicum, and walnuts); comb honey with that wonderful clotted cream called kaymak; and what is known here as "milk jam" (similar to dulce de leche, and totally delicious).
We needed a bit of a walk after all that, so we did seafront and murals:
We head for KL tomorrow, so that pretty much wraps up our Istanbul experience. It has been lovely. Istanbul has a charm that I never grow tired of, and I very much wish we were staying longer.
