This morning we took the trundly bus to Bau, a little town southwest of Kuching. The journey takes about an hour, and costs MYR 7 return.

From Bau you can easily walk, via a pretty temple and a pretty lake, to the Wind Cave (entry costs MYR 5 for foreigners). The weather was still a little looming, not quite sure whether to cheer up or have a good cry.

Once you're away from the cave entrance, you're at the mercy of your flashlight. So your senses tune into the soundscape. The river rushes, the drips plop, and a cast of swiftlets and bats variously squeak (like tiny teddies), chirrup, and click.

Near the caves, you can view a simple and artless version of the Sarawak River, before it gets all sophisticated in Kuching. And resting beneath one of the riverside gazebos, while eating Chinese biscuits, and watching the flow, is a fine way to spend an hour or so.

We walked back, stopping off at the Heritage Refreshment Cafe for iced lemon drinks. By now the weather had brightened considerably.

Before climbing aboard the bus again, we stopped off at the food court for coffee and pau (stuffed steamed buns). There's something childishly pleasing about having pau in Bau.

A fine day out. We'll go again.
