This morning we boarded the bus to the state capital. It was the same bus we'd taken from Banja Luka to get to Travnik, and today it was running even later than it did on Monday. But never mind. It eventually appeared, and we'd factored a goodly delay into the time we'd given our hosts in Sarajevo. Again, it was comfortable, and not too crowded.

Journey time: Two hours and 20 minutes. A pleasant enough ride. None of the spectaculars of Monday's journey, but a steady parade of hills, "mountain" houses (with their roofs on sideways), and mosques. For long stretches we were following the river.

The bus station in Sarajevo is right next to the train station, and neither is far from our new place. Another nice little flat. They all have their quirks, but it's amazing how quickly you get used to them.

Having missed lunch, we headed straight for a burek seller. Lots of what are essentially take-away food providers here have little tables in the corner of their premises that you can use if you want to eat in. It's not a cafe as such, and you're not expected to linger, but they'll put the food on plates, and provide you with cutlery. It's a nice way to get a cheap lunch. We had a combo of burek (apparently, in Bosnia, it's only burek if it's meat-filled) and cheese pita (same thing, just a different stuffing). With two tubs of ayran (that yogurt drink that we first met in Turkiye), the bill came to KM 8.50 (GBP 3.70).

By the time we'd sorted our hunger, hauled a consignment of shopping home from the nearby Konzum, and collected our onward rail ticket (more on this later), the light was waning. But we did a quick turn down the road towards the city:

Our landlord had told us about Sarajevo's reputation for being the place where "east" meets "west", where Istanbul rubs shoulders with Vienna. Of course, these labels are always problematic, but even our short walk this evening started to show us what he meant. This really does look like another unique place.
