We started with a quick post-breakfast walk. Our last glimpses of Palermo, just as the sun was touching the tops of the buildings, were superb:

Next, the walk to the railway station, which is very grand:

Another station lunch. A sandwich, an arancina, two cappuccini: Really not bad.

And then the train to Cefalu. It was a pleasant ride, although we were unable to capture the most dramatic bit: Snow-covered peaks just behind the coast. Still, the rest was picturesque:

Having no idea how long the shops would stay open on this New Year's Eve, we thought it wisest to do some provisioning before heading for our accommodation. So, the full packs were lugged up the hill to Conad, and the Other Tern guarded them while PT foraged.

More laden than usual, therefore, we headed for the street that will be home for the next five nights:

We let ourselves into our prospective accommodation, which was definitely picturesque:

But then we realized we'd missed a message from our landlord. He had a surprise for us, he said... An upgrade. Another (superior) property he owns, just a couple of doors down, was vacant, and he thought he might as well let us have it.

It's another very interesting conversion:

The mezzanine. We've made this area into a dining-and-work space. Part of the fun of staying in different places is that you learn to figure out how to make them work for you...

Our landlord also gifted us a New Year's bottle of prosecco (very generous), so -- with that and what we'd rustled up from our supermarket trip -- we've had an excellent dinner.

And in a bit, we'll head out to see how Cefalu does New Year.
