It happened like this: Accor, a hotel chain we quite like, and often use, were doing a special on hotels in various places. Miri was one. So we thought we'd have a few days away for Nigel's birthday.

Our first trip to Miri was in 2019. We came on the bus, and stayed a couple of weeks, as we were still nomadic at that stage. Then, in 2022, we came again. That time, it was the end-point of a road trip that had included Sarikei, Daro, Mukah, and Bintulu. We stayed four nights, and we left -- although we didn't realize it at the time -- with covid.

This time we flew up. I always feel bad about short flights. Flying, let's be honest, is a terrible thing to do to the environment, and the less we do it, the better. Some flying we can't avoid, as we have family who live a long way away. But that means we should do even less elective flying.

With Miri, that's tricky. Even in the most favourable circumstances, you're talking about a 10-hour drive. More when you put in stops. That's too long a driving day for us, so we'd overnight somewhere. Same the other end. So your four-night trip is now a six-night trip. And your relaxing time in Miri is bookended by two days of fairly hard yakka. In any case we didn't want too long away. Only just moved in to our place in Kuching. Only just beginning to enjoy it. Etc. Etc.

Bottom line: We flew up, and we'll fly back. We'll do our best to compensate in the months to come.

Anyway, the Pullman Miri were real stars, and upgraded us!

We have a fabulous suite, with a big living-room, bedroom, and bathroom, plus a little dressing-room. And it's right on the end of the building, so we get brilliant views of the river mouth and the sea beyond:

Don't be deceived. Nigel's in it for the photo, but the chaise longue arrangement is MINE...

It's fascinating watching the comings and goings on the river. You see fishing-boats, speedboats, and a variety of vessels serving the oil rigs that sit just off the Miri coast

First destination: Coffee Code. It's not a trip away without a visit to Coffee Code... And on the way there and back, you can enjoy a bit of early-evening Miri:
