We realized with some degree of shock the other day that we have no river-aspect photos of Newark's famous castle.

I think we've always looked, thought: "oh, how lovely, but we're bound to have photos already", and photographed something else.

So I hereby repair this omission with two portraits of a rather wintry-looking castle:

castle1

castle2

We similarly had no interior pictures of Newark's beautiful parish church, St Mary Magdalene.

Again, sorted:

nave

roof

arches

altar

floor

boss

arms
Newark's coat of arms

window
The medieval window

dd1
The Dance of Death, with the skeleton inexorably summoning the rich man

dd2

(And for more exterior views of both these buildings, see here.)

Less monumental, but still very beautiful, are aspects of January Newark such as these:

swan

tree

water

View from the Green Olive at the corner of the market square (note the cosy blankets)

And here's Friday's piece de resistance:

pork

This was a tender and tasty pan-roasted pork cutlet, with a little pile of chorizo, potato, and onion mash, slimline broccoli, and a really delicious jus. It came from our old favourite The Staunton Arms, and it was very, very good.
