Newark Cemetery, established in the 19th century as a park for the enjoyment of local people as well as a resting place for their dead, is still a quiet and atmospheric place to walk, especially at this time of year, when the snowdrops are just emerging, and the green of the moss leaps out against the leaden skies.
At the centre of the complex is the Polish War Cemetery. Here lie 397 Polish servicemen who fought during World War II.
General Sikorski, the wartime leader of the Polish free forces, used to also be buried here, but his remains were transferred to Krakow in 1993. (We saw the site in Wawel Cathedral on our trip to Poland back in 1995.)
Truly, this little market town has history everywhere.
